The original development of TOGAF was based on the Technical Architecture Framework for Information Management (TAFIM), developed by the US Department of Defence. The DoD gave encouragement to create TOGAF from the basis of TAFIM, which itself represented hundreds of person-years of development effort and millions of dollars of investment.
Starting from this proven foundation, the members of The Open Group Architecture Forum have developed successive versions of TOGAF over the years and published them on The Open Group public web site (www.opengroup.org/architecture). This 2007 Edition is based on TOGAF Version 8.1 with Technical Corrigendum U065 applied, also known as TOGAF Version 8.1.1.
This book is primarily intended to address the needs of the first two of these categories. For those seeking to use TOGAF for internal architecture work, The Open Group makes it available under a free, perpetual license.
All are encouraged to use TOGAF for their various purposes, including those seeking to use it commercially (though different terms apply for commercial use).
