the Second Edition Of paediatric Surgery Has Been Designed To Be Highly Relevant To The Practice Of Clinical Paediatric Surgery. With This In Mind, Topics Are Presented In A Clear And Easily Digestible Format, With The Most Important Learning Points In Each Area Clearly Identified. The Principles Of The Basic Sciences, And How These Relate To Competent Clinical Practice, Are Covered In Each Clinical Chapter, And Are An Important Part Of The Intercollegiate Board Examination And Other Higher Examinations In Paediatric Surgery In Europe And Australia.
while Many Of The Topics From The Previous Edition Have Been Retained And Updated As Appropriate, There Are A Number Of Important Additions. The Important And Developing Field Of Minimally Invasive Surgery Has Been Given More Prominence. Oncology Has Been Expanded To Include More Detail On Solid Tumors As Well As More On Central Venous Access And The Surgical Assessment Of The Acutely Unwell Child Undergoing Chemotherapy. Thoracic Surgery Has Been Expanded To Include The Management Of Empyema And The Open And Endoscopic Approach To Resection And Biopsy. Finally, Important ‘generic’ Issues Such As Communication Skills, The Critical Analysis Of Journal Articles And Evidence-based Medicine Have All Been Introduced.
the Second Edition Of paediatric Surgery Will Be An Invaluable Resource For All Trainee Paediatric Surgeons, Providing A Summary Of Practical, Evidence-based Advice For The Candidate For The Intercollegiate Board Specialty Examination In Paediatric Surgery (frcs Paeds), Or Other Equivalent Examination, With Overwhelming And Unnecessary Detail.
doody Review Services reviewer: robert M Arensman, Md(university Of Illinois At Chicago College Of Medicine)
description: this Is A Revision Of The European Basic Textbook Of Pediatric Surgery. As Such, It Is An Update Of The 2005 Edition Published In Great Britain By Hodder Education. It Is A Standard Text On Pediatric Surgery With An Emphasis On General Surgery (to Include Thoracic, Abdominal, And Oncology Procedures) And Urology.
purpose: the Four Editors Write That There Are Two Categories Of Pediatric Surgery Textbooks: Detailed Reference Texts, Often Extending To More Than One Volume, Which Any Specialist Paediatric Surgeon Will Wish To Consult On A Regular Basis When Dealing With Uncommon Conditions, And Small Books Designed For Students, General Practitioners, And Junior Surgeons…. The Latter Is The Book They Have Set Out To Produce, And In That Task They Have Succeeded Nicely.
audience: to That End, The Editors Have Assembled 85 Contributors To Produce 64 Chapters (a Single Volume In 584 Pages) On The Standard Subjects Of Pediatric Surgery. Most Of The Authors Are Well Known Members And Heads Of European Sections Of Pediatric Surgery. The Result Is A Textbook Designed For Trainees In Paediatric Surgery In Order To Provide Them With The Knowledge Required To Help Them Complete Their Training And To Pass Specialist Examinations Such As Those In Place In The U.k., Europe, And Australasia.
features: the Book Is Divided Into Six Parts And Produced In A Format Standard For The Large Textbooks On Pediatric Surgery. The Editors Open With Chapters On General Principles Of Surgical Care. The Next Five Portions Are Arranged Anatomically And Deal With Gastrointestinal Problems, Thoracic Conditions, General Surgery (the Term Is Used Here To Mean Herniae, Hydroceles, Undescended Testes, Injury, Burns, And Hydrocephalus/spina Bifida — Rather A Potpourri), Oncology And Urology. It Seems A Bit Arbitrary To Place Undescended Testes In General Surgery Rather Than Urology, But All The Standard Subjects Are Included. The Chapters Are Illustrated Well And Contain A Novel Closing With 1-5 Clinical Scenarios And, Occasionally, Study Questions. The Book Is Without Reference Or Attribution, Although Each Chapter Ends With A List Of Reference Readings Or Articles And Also A List Of Further Readings.
assessment: overall, This Is A Nice Revision Of A Basic Text In Pediatric Surgery. It Contains All The Standard Information, Is Presented Intelligently And Clearly Although Without Great Elaboration Of History, Embryology, Or Theory. It Is A Fine Source Of Quick Reference On The Common Surgical Problems Of Childhood, And Certainly Will Be Welcomed By Students And Trainees.
